Not to long ago I was working on a Manitowoc ice machine that was shutting down almost everytime it made one batch of ice.
After troubleshooting the ice machine I found that the bin switch was defective.

You ask “How did you find out it was the bin switch that had the problem?”

My answer falls along these lines. First I will explain what the switch is made of.  It is made of a plastic housing over a

magnet with 2 wires coming out of the plastic cover. There is also a second part of the bin switch that is connected to the

cover that is called a curtain, it also has a magnet attched to it. The 2 magnets are in line with each and can be

separated when the machine goes into harvest.

Symptoms:

Bin Switch Fails to Open

The ice machine will not begin with the toggle switch in the ice position, but runs normally with the toggle switch in the

clean position.

Bin switch Fails to Close

Safety devise 2 is recorded in the control board memory and the harvest cycle continues after the ice opens and closes the

water curtain/ice dampers (harvest cycle is 3.5 minutes for single evaporators and 7 minutes for Quad evaporator models).

Diagnostic ideas

For diagnostics it is recommended that a technician always uses the water curtain to cycle the switch. A magnet that is

bigger or smaller may give a wrong reading. Also settle the VOM display by Opening the curtain/ice dampers for 3 seconds, then closing the curtain/ice dampers for 3 seconds.

Then take a continuity test.

1. Disconnect the bin switch wires to isolate the bin switch from the control board.

2. Connect an ohmmeter to the disconnected bin switch wires.

3. Cycle the bin switch open and closed 25 times by opening and closing the water curtain/ice dampers. Watch for consistent readings each time the bin switch is cycled open and closed (bin switch failure could be erratic).

I found the Manitowoc ice machine I was working on the bin switch was erratic. When it is erratic it should be replaced or a person might find that he or she will have to manuelly start the ice machine ever so often.

A Man installed a window AC with a panel of corrugators machine having two 11KVA servo drives. One servo drive is always in work and other works for only 12sec after 15-30minutes. The cooling capacity of AC is ½ ton and he set the temperature at 28c. Problem which he have been facing is that compressor of AC starts and only after 30-38sec, temperature drops and compressor stops. Just after 65-80sec temperature again rises and compressor restarts and same cycle repeats. He has been monitoring the compressor starting and stopping through PLC.  He could not understand why compressor is restarting only after 65-80sec. He has covered all the holes of panel but problem remained the same.
